Landscape Design is the art and process of designing and creating plans for the layout, construction and planting of all landscapes.  Whether it is a modest back garden, acres of hillside or a cityscape, landscape design encompasses all outdoor space.

Garden designers are trained in the principles of landscape design, and have an expert knowledge and experience of horticulture and garden construction.  A garden designer will work with you, using their expertise to see that the true potential of your outdoor spaced is realised.

The Process of Creating a Garden Design

Consultation

After contact is made a site meeting is arranged which will usually last for around an hour.  This will normally involve an informal chat and walk around the garden.  It is an opportunity to view a portfolio and discuss ideas for your garden and its potential.
A brief is taken, noting the requirements for your outdoor space, personal tastes, budget and your overall design needs.
From this meeting a quote is prepared for design work which will be sent to you for approval.

Site Survey

Upon approval of the quote a site survey will be carried out.  To produce a scale drawing it is necessary to map out the plot.  The property detail, boundaries and features are measured and recorded.
A site survey will also give information such as soil type, aspect and the physical lay of the land.
It is a chance for a garden designer to spend time alone in the garden and to really get an appreciation for and understand it.

Concept Design

Combining the information from the client brief together with the site survey, a survey drawing is drawn up and a concept design will be sketched out.

A presentation of the concept design will involve talking about the philosophy behind the design and considering details such as choice of materials and ideas for planting.  Any required changes and alterations can be discussed.
From here a finished design can be produced, although an extra meeting is sometimes required.

Finished Design

All of our designs are hand drawn using simply pencil and paper.  It is a unique design created for you.  A single copy of the original will be made and it is yours to keep.   Designs are drawn to scale and can in most cases be used for construction purposes.
Coloured drawings can be drawn up separately.

Dependant on the size of the project, should Workwood construct your garden, part or all of the design fee may be deducted from the final construction payment.
Should you choose another contractor we can project monitor to ensure that the design is correctly realised.  We are able to produce extra construction drawings and specifications if necessary.

Planting Plans

Once a design is finalised, planting plans can be drawn up.  A combination of the brief, site survey and all the key points of plant design will ensure that the correct species are chosen.  A planting plan will show the layout and quantities of plant stock.
We are able to source quality plant stock on your behalf and can provide quotes for plant supply and planting.

Planting plans are not compulsory.  Should you have your own ideas regarding planting we are more than happy to offer advice and guidance yet submit a finished design only.
