Since man first discovered fire and started to burn wood, trees have been an integral part of our lives and mankind has shared an intimate relationship with them. Trees are part of our natural heritage and provide us with the very air we breathe. The tropical rainforests are known as the “lungs of the earth”. Trees give us logs for burning and provide us with construction materials for things such as shelter, tools and musical instruments. They are also home to a diverse range of wildlife.
Whether a specimen pine in an arboretum, a tranquil beech woodland or a rugged windswept hawthorn in the countryside, trees are things of splendour and magnificence.
To ensure their good health and long life they should be cared for properly and correctly. We offer a comprehensive range of tree care services.

Pruning Operations
|
Formative Pruning
Formative pruning is the pruning of trees when they are young. The outcome is to produce a tree that in maturity will be healthy, strong and true to form.
Unwanted secondary leading or codominant shoots and potentially weak forks are removed. Dead, diseased and damaged growth is removed, as well as crossing and badly placed growth.
Formative pruning reduces the need for major pruning in middle age and in maturity and is an important part of young tree care. Trees are pruned to encourage and enhance their natural form and to create an open and well balanced branch structure.

Crown Thinning
Crown thinning reduces the overall thickness of the tree's crown to produce an even density of foliage around a well spaced and balanced branch structure.
A proportion of secondary and small live branch growth from throughout the crown is removed.
Dead, diseased and damaged growth is removed as well as crossing and badly placed growth.
The percentage of the crown to be removed will be stated, but the leaf area removed will not normally exceed 30% of the original coverage. The original appearance, height and spread of the tree remains unchanged. Windthrow is reduced and light is better able to filter though the crown.
|
 |
Crown Reduction and Reshaping
Trees can be reduced in height and spread while still preserving a natural tree shape by crown reduction and reshaping.
This is carried out by cutting back to a side bud or branch to retain a flowing branch line without leaving stumps. Heavy and potentially unsafe limbs are reduced to relieve the weight that the tree is carrying.
Very substantial crown reductions should ideally not be made during a single growing season since severe loss of leaf area and multiple wounding may impair a tree’s defences against diseases and decay. It is far better for the trees health to spread the reduction and reshaping over two or more seasons. |
 |
Crown Lifting
Crown lifting involves the removal of lower branches to a given height above ground level.
Whole branches or only those parts which extend below the desired cleared height are removed.
Better access and improved light levels are achieved as the space beneath a tree is opened up. The tree will retain good form and appearance. |
 |
|
Pollarding
Pollarding is a radical form of tree pruning.
All growth is removed either to previous pollard points on an established pollarded tree or to a given point or specified height.
Very heavy pruning will stimulate some species to produce a proliferation of very dense re-growth of shoots. Pollarding should not be used on trees that have not been previously pollarded as the large wounds created initiate serious decay in mature and maturing trees.
It is used if no other tree pruning technique is adequate to achieve the desired result.

Other Tree Care Operations
| |
Crown Cleaning
Crown maintnenance is performed when a tree is in need of a general tidy and not major pruning. One or all of the above operations may be undertaken in small parts to give a tree a well needed lift. Ivy, deadwood, crossing branches and unsightly growth are removed alonside any other unwanted growth and litter. A crown clearance encouarages good tree health and form. |
| |
Tree Removal
Tree removal is achieved by clear felling or section felling.
Where spaces permits, trees can be clear felled and then dismantled on the ground for removal.
Trees in a confined area and larger trees are more commonly section felled. When being section felled, all lateral growth is cut back to the trunk of the tree. The trunk is then dismantled.
Stumps can be cut to ground level or ground out with a stump grinder. Occasionally stumps are left tall to provide a support for a climbing plants, as a habitat for wildlife or to be used for sculpture.

Dangerous Limb and Tree Removal
A tree that has suffered storm or snow damage, is in the latter stages of disease or for whatever reason is structurally unstable can pose a real threat of damage or harm. Normally the affected limb or tree can be removed with minimal disruption and be made safe.
